ABOUT

'Matt Clark Presents "Vol. IIX: Another Fable of Deaf Joe Breath' is a compilation of the music Clark provided for the Spring 2019 KCRW podcast Lost Notes, season 2, episode 5, on the complicated legacy of American Primitive guitar pioneer John Fahey, AKA Blind Joe Death. Specifically, on the disturbing stories multiple women have shared regarding what it was actually like to be in a relationship and live with Fahey.

Here lie those fourteen instrumental songs - and some bits, and a few pieces - of guitar, fingerpicked, strummed, and otherwise. Mostly acoustic, a tiny bit electric, not at all rehearsed, and entirely underproduced; Clark had about 48 hours to tune up and churn out these 14 burners, at the 11th hour request of Lost Notes honcho Jessica Hopper. Whole lotta first takes, no second thoughts, and zero third wheels - Hopper is also his wife and baby momma, and how could he have said no? He couldn't have, and he didn't want to, and he therefore ignored the voluminous wails of their children, consumed much coffee (ergo, his nom-de-podcast, Deaf Joe Breath), and made this music. For Hopper, for the suits at KCRW, for the women who told their stories, and now... for you.

Recorded by Clark at The Golden Teapot; mixed and mastered by Todd Rittmann (beloved Chicago icon and the brilliant brawn behind Drag City's own Dead Rider; ex-U.S. Maple mind-blower) at Chicago's The Shy Diamond.

SOME NEW KIND WORDS ON LOST NOTES:

Season 2 of Lost Notes was *just* named Vulture's #1 podcast for 2019; hot damn! (Was it the music?)

SOME OLD KIND WORDS ON MATT CLARK:

Matt Clark's "Impossible Lows" awarded BEST EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC ON BANDCAMP: MAY 2019, by Marc Masters:

"To make his first full-length album, Chicago guitarist Matt Clark—a former member of Joan of Arc and Pinebender—spent 10 days recording first takes and sticking with them. The result, 'Impossible Lows,' doesn’t feel like a sketchbook, but rather a thought-out series of instrumental statements with firm moods and self-contained environments. It’s also sonically diverse; Clark is capable of delicate avant-folk, thickened drones, extended riffs, and more. Most compelling is the eight-minute odyssey “Zola Mae,” which opens with gentle, distant tones, and gradually builds into a thatch of noise guitar that sounds like it’s being broadcast through a faulty transistor radio. Such textural variety seems to come naturally to Clark, giving 'Impossible Lows' the kind of durability that rewards repeat plays."
